EAST HARBOR STATE PARK
I had an idea to get away for a weekend with my wife &
kids.
I wanted to forget steelhead, walleye, trolling, casting, electronics, and get
back to my roots,
a bobber and a soup can full of worm's.
I wanted my kids to have the same excitement I had watching the red & white
bobber disappear,
so I planned a camping trip late last summer. I left the boat at home, and
packed a tent ,
some cooking utensils and a few kids rods. I decided to drive to
East Harbor
State Park ,
and rent a campsite, and let the kids fish, and with any luck have a fish fry.
I had never been to
East Harbor
State Park before, and didn't know if I would find some willing
bluegill or not. I was just hoping to have a nice time with my family. I went in
and for a minimal
fee I rented a camp site, in the back row near the water, I set up the lanterns,
grills and the tent,
and took a walk towards the water, I quickly knew I had chosen the right spot
for bluegill,
this has to be one of the #1 spots in Ohio for bluegill.
Just off the shore in
the campground, the water
is approximately 6'-8' deep, with lots of weeds & lily pads. I made a cast and
sure enough,
as soon as my bobber hit the water it tore off in another direction and
disappeared,
it was a bluegill the size of my hand, they don't come any better than that!
So I caught a few fish then went to buy some ice for the cooler, and returned to
the waters
edge with my wife & 2 daughters, I let them cast their selves, and they
immediately ripped into some
fish! As fast as you could cast, a hand sized bluegill would take your bait
before it even
settled , the kids had a blast, and the fish basket quickly filled up. We would
have our fish fry !

My wife also caught her share of fish, and after being used to Steelhead & huge
Smallies,
I saw that she was having more fun doing this! We returned to the campsite and I
cleaned some of
the fish, and fried them up, was the best fish fry to date. One bad thing about
this area
(for me) was the amount of water snakes, they were big, they were EVERYWHERE,
they would swim or slither right up on you, and a few times they caused a panic.
They even attacked our fish basket biting at the fish inside. Just WAY to many
snakes for me.
But that comes with the territory of a high class fishing spot!
Here is a couple shots of the water snakes attacking our
fish basket!

Its a very nice campground, the bluegill fishing is
finer than anywhere I ever tried,
and there is lots of activities for the family, besides fishing, there is a
waterslide, the beach & etc.

If your looking to have a great time with some Ohio Bluegill,
this place is a sure fire bet to
have a great time catching 50 yards from the tent!
I'm also betting this area will be first class ICE FISHING to, and without the
snakes!
This area reminded me of Presq- Isle over in Pennsylvania. Without the non
resident fee's of course.

Pymatuning Lake
I found a GREAT Pymatuning Bluegill spot by
accident, I found it when I
had drifted up too shallow while walleye fishing! This spot is on the South end
of the lake,
just south of the Causeway , as a matter of fact its at the
first island south of the causeway,
on the Ohio side of the lake. I believe you can even wade to this spot from
"fisherman's point".
If your looking to catch some summer slab bluegills, this spot is a gem.
This spot is about 3'-6' deep, and its literally a
stones throw from the boat ramp,
in my opinion, this is the spot to take kids to as the water is shallow, and the
ramps near by.
You can locate this spot going to the NORTH side of
the island, when on the NORTH side of the island,
you will have the causeway on one side of you (in the distance) and the island
on the other side.
You want to get right up close to the north side of the
island, you will find the water is very shallow ,
I would say that 100-200 yards north from that island, is the hottest bluegill
action on Pymatuning
during the summer months. When the water is clear, you can see dozens of beds.
This area is a sand / gravel bar, and I actively catch walleye there on the
deeper sides of the bar.
But up on the bar, its loaded with bluegills. If you position your boat right,
you can fish the shallows
for bluegills and the deeper water for walleye from the same spot.
I
like to anchor in the shallows, and tie on some bobbers and
small hooks, or small jigs, and tip them with pieces of worms.
I let the kids sit up on the bow and go to town casting & catching bluegills.
This is one of them spots that you would overlook due to its proximity to the
shore, but the biggest
bluegills we have ever caught came off this island. You will find this
spot on this map,
on the left hand side, just south of the causeway at the first island.
