Smelt Fishing Conneaut Ohio

Not everyone knows what "smelt fishing " is , I knew what they were from eating them at the holidays,
but not everyone takes part in the tradition. I Know everyone around the Lake knows what it is though!
I thought I would share some TIPS. I fish for smelt through the Ice at Conneaut Harbor Lake Erie.
When I say the harbor I mean in the  boat slip.

This is the marina
I like to drill a few holes before dark, and set up a lantern over 1 hole, or a floating headlight rig,
that's a sure way to attract a load of smelt to the hole. Also I like to chum them with a handful of grits
in the hole. Once you get a school of smelt in the safety of the light, your sure to catch a nice meals
worth. I use tiny hooks, REAL tiny, I prefer a small fly hook, in the size 18-22 range,
Yes I like the hooks that tiny. Also I use maggots which I cut into the thinnest slices I can with a razor blade.
I tie on 1 or 2 hooks on some ultra- light line , and just yank them out of the hole.
With smelt, you need to catch a lot, in order to have enough for a snack, when fried up they are
quite the appetizer. And its good to get out and do some fishing sometimes.
Also this spot has roaming steelhead that will make the hole trip worth it should you land one.
I like to use a fresh smelt on a tip up a short distance away from the shanty.

img402/4596/pub336ach4.gif  Not many people target perch on this inland lake but they are there once you find them.
I would like to share a few tips that have helped me find them on this lake.

img402/7739/icefishing063jr7.jpg   I like to find a shelf or some deeper water out towards the center of the lake.
I normally fish 15' to 25' for perch and once i find a spot i normally don't move. A lot of people move
around a bunch but I stay in one spot ( the fish will find me).
Now on to the equipment I use, not everyone uses the same stuff or bait but this is what has worked for me.
I currently use a vexliar, aqua-vu, shanty, and a buddy heater.

img293/8164/icefishing025ds0.jpg   For bait I tend to use minnows and wax worms tipped on a green glow jig or a cicada.
A great tip I learned just a few weekends ago was to bounce your jig off the bottom turning up the muck.
I found out this tends to draw the perch in faster and once they are interested they stay for awhile.
Once they perch leave bounce your jig off the bottom turning things up a bit and WHAM! hold on to your poles.
I have noticed that perch fishing has its best times and it's worst times. If you find perch and they are biting
be patient I miss a lot of fish while fishing for them and yes its frustrating but I keep it cool and get even.

I own a fish trap guide ice shanty and have realized that once being inside the shanty with the
heater running that you cannot see outside the windows once they fog up. Well I have found something that
has worked for me. I buy some cheap barbosol shaving cream and smear it on the windows and let it dry.
I normally only have to do this maybe 2 to 3 times a year. I do this when Im running tip-ups so I can see them.
