In
Ohio, the primary food source is shad. In the upper Midwest, it is ciscoes and
Tula bees.
Shad are a much smaller fish. As such, the massive 12" - 15" plus baits that you
see used on many fishing
shows are not necessary for our local waters. They can catch fish, but a 5" - 6'
bait will work just as well
in our waters, especially early.
Start the season out working close to the shore with smaller lures. As the year
progresses, begin upsizing
your bait. Also, begin trolling more open water, looking for suspended fish.
Once the water temperature gets to 80 degrees, please, do not target musky's
until it cools down! Stress
from being caught in warm water is the leading killer of caught fish. If you do
catch one in warm water,
consider an "in the water" release. This will at least give the fish a chance.
Once the waters cool, try larger baits closer to shore. The fish are storing up
for winter and will be on
the prowl for easy meals.
Getting back to lure size, I have found that Leesville and Clear Fork tend to be
known as "small" lure lakes.
Pymatuning and Chautauqua in NY are more "large" lure lakes and West Branch,
Milton & Salt Fork fall in
between.
